Sam Rainsy Is the Destroyer of Cambodia’s Democracy, Says Rainsy’s Former Confidant
Phnom Penh – Kong Korm, then president of Sam Rainsy Party and now Khmer Will Party’s honorary president, stated that the exiled former opposition leader Sam Rainsy is the destroyer of Cambodia’s democracy.
He urged Cambodian people not to trust, remember, nor help Sam Rainsy. “Do not trust, remember, or help the cheating group [Sam Rainsy and associates]. Sam Rainsy’s repatriation is impossible,” Kong Korm addressed at the Extraordinary Congress, celebrating one-year anniversary of Khmer Will Party, held at its headquarter in Phnom Penh’s Chamkarmorn district on Sunday. Korm, Rainsy’s former confidant, considered Rainsy the “destroyer of Cambodia’s democracy” when Rainsy urged Cambodian people not to go to vote through his “sleep at home” campaign.
Rainsy, on 18 May 2018, also accused the King’s letter a forgery, which was widely considered an insult. The exiled former opposition party leader wrote on Facebook on 6 June 2018: “King's letter urging people to go to vote: a forgery or a piece made under duress thus legally worthless". According to Cambodian criminal code, insulting His Majesty is subject to a one to five years imprisonment, and a fine of USD 2,500 to USD 12,500 and other additional punishments. Judge Ros Piseth, on 2 May 2019, sentenced Sam Rainsy to eight years imprisonment and a fine of USD 5,000 to the state, charged with two separate cases – incited military to disobey orders; and insulted the King when he claimed a royal election letter was fake.
In the court's separate letters, Rainsy was charged with inciting military personnel to disobey orders and demoralization of the army for his activities on 6-8 and 10 June 2017 in Phnom Penh and other places, a violation of article 471 and 472 of the criminal code. Rainsy was sentenced to four years imprisonment and a fine of USD 2,500. On the other hand, insulting His Majesty, Rainsy was sentenced to four years imprisonment and a fine of USD 2,500.
Kong Korm pledged this Sunday that he would not violate the principles of the Paris Peace Accord like Sam Rainsy. “Khmer Will Party will be the descendant to implement Paris Peace Accord by participating in the regular elections to be held every five year,” Korm underlined at the Party’s Extraordinary Congress,” Korm also accused the dissolved Cambodia National Rescue Party of destroying Cambodia’s general elections held in 2018 which the ruling Cambodian People’s Party won a landslide victory.
